Elder Berry
What it is:
Musical instruments, weaving needles, and of course, elderberry wine, all have come from this plant, a member of the honeysuckle family. People have been cultivating this small tree, with it's clusters of tiny white or yellow flowers and blackish purple berries, probably since prehistoric times. Nine or so different species of Elder grow in various parts of North America and Europe. The bark, berries, and flowers all have been used to make tonics, said to do everything from induce sweating and reduce fevers, and treat colds, to encouraging excretions...and it is an excellent cure for viruses and the flu....
Therapeutic Uses:
Bronchitis, colds, coughing, breathing problems, flu, viruses, herpes, mucous membranes, inflammation, sinusitus, sore throat, arthritus, pain, boils and bruises, constipation, eczema, fevers, headaches, swellings.....
Medicinal Properties:
the phytochemicals in Elder are good viral vanquishers, particularly in the respiratory system. In one clinical trial, a standardized herbal extract allieviated symptoms and cured 90% of the poeple, hit by a 1993 flu outbreak...in just three days.....this is an excellent stistic for this wonderful and tried and true remedy, from our ansestors...
The extract, some research suggests, binds to the flu viruses, preventing them from invading cells and replicating. Bioflavonoids in the extract, may contribute to the deterrent effect.
Dosage Options:
Put 2 tsp. of dried Elder flowers ( I use the dried berries too,)in a cup of hot water ...steep covered. strian and drink several times a day....You can also take 1/2 to one tsp. of a liquid extract of flowers and berries three times a day.....
Safety Rating:
None reported with dried fruit and flowers, but raw or unripe parts of the plant, are not recommended for use....as it can cause upset stomach....
Making of Tinture or Extract:
One ounce of dried berries and dried flowers placed in a quart mason jar or bottle.... fill jar with brandy or vodka ...completely cover the herb....and seal....shake once a day for a week..then occationally for about a month...it will come to it's full potency within a months time....as used...replace the spirits with more to the top....can be renewed for seven times ..then it looses some of it's potency....
I like to use brandy or wine...for a bit of the grape...for a flu remedy....and it tasts divine...enjoy! AHO!
