Winnemem Wintu suffer devestating fire
March 11th, 2008 (12:00 pm)
Dear friends -
As you may or may not be aware, a fire recently destroyed significant parts of the Winnemem village of Kerekmet.
On February 19th, a blaze burned down Caleen and Waimem's home. In doing so, it destroyed nearly all their possessions. This includes all of 16 year old Waimem's clothes and electronics (including a playstation!), several computers, two dogs and two parrots. The cause of the fire is unknown.
As if loosing these things are not hard enough, the Tribe lost much of their traditional regalia, including all the dresses made for the Coming of Age ceremony held for Waimem last summer, all the Tribe's eagle feathers, all their basket hats, and several parts of Caleen's spiritual doctoring materials.
To assist the Tribe in their efforts to rebuild their lost infrastructure and rebuild some of the cultural heritage they have lost, we are trying provide some small resources and a gesture of support from the Winnemem's larger, extended community.
The Tribe has expressed that monetary donations would be the most effective, as many of the items lost are hard to replace, but gift cards to outlets in the local area such as Best Buy, Target, etc in the area also work.
Many of us know and work with the Winnemem closely in many different ways. Please support them in this critical time of need.
Any cash donations are tax deductible and should be made out and sent to:
Environmental Justice Coalition for Water
654 13th St
Oakland CA 94612
EJCW serves as the Winnemem's fiscal sponsor and will send all donations to the village immediately.
Sincerely,
Amy Vanderwarker
