Ute leader sits in place of honor at Capitol
DENVER - Ute Mountain Ute chairman Ernest House Sr. sat in a place of honor during Gov. Bill Ritter's State of the State speech Thursday.
Chairmen of both Ute tribes were invited to the speech, staffers in Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien's office said. But Southern Ute Chairman Clement Frost was stuck at home because of the heavy snow.
House sat in the front row of the House of Representatives next to the governor's senior advisers.
Ritter also announced his first Governor's Excellence in Renewable Energy Awards. Among the five winners was the Smiley Building in Durango. The former junior high school was refurbished to include solar power and a variety of energy efficiency features.
