Proposed anti-gaming bill blocks tribal land claims

WASHINGTON, D.C. | The chairman of a major House committee has introduced a bill that would block Indian tribes from establishing land claims for the purpose of establishing casinos in communities where they own no property.
The legislation might block the Delaware Nation of Anadarko, Okla., from establishing title to 315 acres now owned by Binney & Smith and 25 private homeowners in Forks Township, in both Bucks and Northampton counties. The tribe wants to swap the Forks Township property for a chance to establish a gaming operation elsewhere, not necessarily in Forks Township itself.
A bill summary distributed by U.S. Rep. Richard Pombo, chairman of the House Resources Committee, said his anti-gaming legislation would block a tribe that already has land eligible for some kind of gambling operation from acquiring "any more land not contiguous to the reservation and use it for gaming, without exception."
