Former Democratic Administration Officials Open Law Firm
- AndersonTuell, LLP to focus on Federal Indian Law -
WASHINGTON,/PRNewswire/ -- Michael J. Anderson and Loretta A.
Tuell announced the formation of AndersonTuell, LLP, which begins operation
today. The firm focuses on Federal Indian law and represents American
Indian Tribal Government clients' regulatory, legislative and litigation
interests before the Congress, federal agencies and courts.
AndersonTuell, LLP is a 100 percent Indian-owned law firm and one of
the first law firms in the nation's capital with a Native American woman as
a founding partner. The firm begins operations with a nationwide client
base served by five attorneys and two staff members.
Areas of practice include general counseling to tribal governments,
environmental law, housing, healthcare, federal recognition, trust land
acquisitions, tax law, tribal codes and Indian gaming law.
Prior to forming AndersonTuell, LLP, the founders were partners at
Monteau and Peebles. According to Anderson, "Since we began working
together over a decade ago, Loretta and I both had a goal of creating a
highly specialized law practice that would work hand-in-hand with in-house
tribal counsel to advance the ability of tribal governments to operate
effectively, efficiently, and independently."
"I appreciate their tremendous expertise in regulatory, legislative,
and legal affairs," said Vice-Chair Rosemary Morillo, Soboba Band of
Luiseno Indians of California. "Tribes understand how important it is to
have Washington D.C. representation that not only understands federal
issues but also understands tribal concerns and tribal opportunities."
Mr. Anderson served as deputy assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs at
the U.S. Department of Interior from 1995-2001 and associate solicitor for
Indian Affairs at the Department from 1993-1995. He has also worked for the
U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, as well as in private practice in
Colorado and Washington, D.C. He is a graduate of the Georgetown University
Law Center and is an enrolled member of the Muskogee Nation.
While at the Department of Interior from 1998-2001, Ms. Tuell served as
director of the Office of American Indian Trust and special assistant and
counselor to the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. She previously
served as counsel for Senator Daniel Inouye on the Senate Committee on
Indian Affairs. She has taught Indian law and policy at American
University. She received her JD from the University of California at Los
Angeles and is an enrolled member of the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho.
They are also joined in their practice by partner Derril B. Jordan, the
former associate solicitor for Indian Affairs at the Department of Interior
from 1997-2000. He is a member of the Mattaponi Tribe.
