NMAI draws thousands to Washington powwow Monday, August 13, 2007
About 45,000 people attended the National Museum of the American Indian's National Powwow in Washington, D.C. The three-day powwow drew dancers and drum groups from the U.S. and Canada. "It's a time for all the tribes to come together and represent our heritage," NMAI spokesperson Leonda Levchuk told The Washington Post. Veterans and active members of the military were honored during the event. Indian soldiers who were stationed in Iraq brought a drum they made out of a tarp and a barrel. "We were missing our powwow," Staff Sgt. Debra Mooney told the Post. "In our hearts and minds, we were right at home." The powwow is held every two years.
