Skokomish tribe looks to move away from Hood Canal
SKOKOMISH, Wash. The Skokomish tribe has started work on a project to build homes for tribal members on high ground near Potlatch to save Hood Canal. Tribal members say moving the tribes growth from the Skokomish River delta to land 500 feet above Hood Canal will prevent some of the nitrogen pollution that contributes to canal's low oxygen levels and fish kills. The Skokomish tribe has about 700 members. The tribe already is installing water lines to the new development. Construction of the first 20 of a planned initial phase of 30 homes will be complete by May 2008. Many scientists think that nitrogen from septic systems on Hood Canal feeds population explosions of plankton and algae that then die and decay, using up the oxygen in the water.
