Frank Tsosie Thompson, a Navajo Code Talker who served during World War II, died on Monday. He was 87.
Thompson, who lived on the Navajo Nation, enlisted in the U.S. Marines on May 5, 1942, the day he graduated from high school. He served in Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Abemana Atoll, Saipan and Tinian.
In 2001, Thompson was one of the recipients of a Congressional Silver Medal
BREADSPRINGS — Another Navajo Code Talker who used his native language during World War II to confuse America's enemies has died. Frank T. Thompson, 87, died June 2 in Breadsprings. Thompson was a U.S. Marine Code Talker and was awarded a Silver Congressional Medal in 2001 for his service in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Code Talker. He was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Crystal. A family gathering will be 6 tonight, June 3, at the Crystal Chapter. No other information on Thompson’s military service was available this morning. Jerry C. Begay Sr., died in Albuquerque on Memorial Day, according to a news release from the Navajo Nation Council. Begay received the Purple Heart, served in Tarawa during the U.S. invasion of the Japanese island and was honorably discharged in 1945.
