Archaelogists follow trail back to 1806 - Lewis and Clark
HELLS CANYON, Idaho (AP) Historians and archeologists say they may have found an old Nez Perce Indian village where three members of the Lewis and Clark expedition spent time.
Retired University of Iowa professor Steve Russell says the site on the Snake River matches the topography described in Sergeant John Ordway's journal.
Ordway and two other men were sent to get salmon to feed the expedition members during the spring of 1806. The fishing trip was ultimately unsuccessful the men traded for fish but the meat rotted before they made it back to the larger group.
But historians have long speculated about the site of the village where they spent three days during the trip.
A team of archeologists led by Ken Reid is excavating the new site. Reid says all circumstantial evidence suggests that the site is the forgotten village.
