Human skull unearthed at Oceano Dunes
A skull that appears to have belonged to a Native American was found this morning at the southern end of the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.
The skull was intact with its jawbone in a remote area of the dunes that was likely uncovered from years of wind blowing the sand, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
A resource worker for Oceano Dunes discovered the skull at about 9 a.m. while surveying snowy plover nesting areas. The Sheriff’s Department was contacted and a coroner was sent to determine that the remains were not associated with a crime.
The Native American Heritage Commission will determine what will happen with the remains or if they will be moved.
