On July 2005, the ASU Center for Indian Education was
awarded a four year professional development grant
from the U.S. Department of Education to train Native
American teachers to meet the needs of reservation and
urban schools with significant numbers of Native
American student enrollment.
The grant application under the Indian Education
Discretionary Grant Programs cited a dearth of Native
American teachers in a state where there are 21 tribes
and concentrations of Native Americans living in
off-reservation rural areas and in larger urban
locations within the state.
The Native Teacher Professional Development program is
actively recruiting eligible San Carlos Apache tribal
members to apply. Right now the program has eleven
open slots to fill the second cohort for fall 2006 at
Arizona State University.
San Carlos Apache tribal members need to take
advantage of this program because the San Carlos
Apache Tribe is a partner in this Grant.
Last year not one San Carlos Apache member
participated in this program. If you have any interest
