Anchorage - The Alaska Native Heritage Center showcases Native clothing
at the Regalia of the North Fashion Show on Saturday, Dec. 16 from 10:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Two fashion shows, one contemporary and the other
traditional, demonstrate the artistic creation and design of
Alaska's indigenous peoples. Everything from mukluks to kuspuks will
be modeled and displayed. Audrey Armstrong, an Athabascan from Huslia
with 30 years of experience, emcees the event.
Along with the fashion shows, special guest Ramy Brooks brings his
survival gear of the Iditarod for visitors to see and shares his
clothing secrets for keeping warm and safe on the trail.
Dance performances by Kicaput, Naa Luudisk Gwaii Yatx'i and our own
Heritage Center Dancers contribute to the festive mood. Art, language
and dance classes are included with the cost of admission. Winter rates
are $9.95 for adults and $6.95 for children. Members are free.
"Clothing identifies who we are as a people and incorporates
meaningful designs that have been handed down from generation to
generation. The fashion shows will highlight the artistry and
significance of clothing from across Alaska," said Cindy Pennington,
program developer.
The Alaska Native Heritage Center is a non-profit organization dedicated
to sharing, perpetuating, and preserving Alaska Native cultures,
languages, traditions and values through celebration and education. It
is located at 8800 Heritage Center Drive in northeast Anchorage, just
off Muldoon Road North near Bartlett High School. For more information
