Hopi High radio club seeks fundraising assistance
Asdza Shash productions is assisting in coordinating this "Blues"
event for the Hopi High School Students, and with KUYI radio manager,
Lisa Youvella, and Dawa Poleviyuma
POLACCA-The Hopi High School radio club is raising money to attend the
National Federation of Broadcasters meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana
on April 12-15. The radio club is attempting to raise $12,000 so they
can send ten students and two chaperones to attend the conference.
The trip will cost approximately $1,000 for each student to cover
airfare, hotel, food and other amenities. Hopi High School will match
any money that the club raises.
The Hopi High radio class thanks Delmo Shermer and the Yavapai Camp
Verde Tribe for donating funds that allowed three radio students to go
to the national conference in Oregon last year.
The Hopi High School radio club performs the only live remote Native
American high school show in the nation. From 1:30-2 p.m. on
Thursdays, radio club members interview teachers, administrators,
community members and classmates on KUYI. KUYI is the Hopi community
radio station. The students work closely with KUYI Station Manager
Lisa Youvella and also telephone in news briefs to KINO in Winslow.
The radio students also submit broadcast segments to PRX in Boston.
PRX posts them on their web site and some of the segments are picked
up by radio stations throughout the country. Those interested can look
up the site at PRX.org. The students attending the national youth
radio conference benefit by meeting students from other radio stations
from throughout the country and learning more about radio techniques.
If you would like to donate, checks should be made out to the Hopi
High Radio Club and mailed to P.O. Box 337, Keams Canyon, Arizona,
86034. For more information about the meeting or about how to donate
funds to the radio club, please call radio teacher Stan Bindell at
928-738-5111, extension 241.
