Key Indian Leader Welmas Dead At 77 By UPI
ESCONDIDO, Calif. - Dec. 28, 2006 (UPI) -- Arthur James Welmas, who led the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians in a key victory at the U.S. Supreme Court, has died at the age of 77. The Los Angeles Times said Welmas, who led the California American-Indian tribe against the Supreme Court in a key reservation gambling case, died Dec. 17 of complications from diabetes and kidney failure. In 1983, Welmas and the Riverside County tribe fought the efforts of area officials to interfere with their gambling endeavors and took the matter to the Supreme Court, which ruled that that states cannot regulate gambling on Indian reservations.
