Oneida Nation mourns death of Bear Clan Mother The Oneida Indian Nation is deeply saddened at the passing on early Tuesday of Marilyn John (“Katsi’tsya’ha:wi”), Bear Clan Mother to the Oneida Nation Men’s Council and Clan Mothers, a statement from the tribe said.
“Since the late 1980s, Mrs. John worked in business capacities and as a governmental leader for the Nation, always pursuing her life’s missions: helping improve the quality of life for Oneida Nation Members, while also working to promote better understanding from the non-Indian community for Indian and Oneida people for future generations,” the Oneida Nation statement continued.
“Mrs. John was deeply involved in helping the Nation chart and pursue an invigorated course of self-sufficiency and community development. Over the last 15 years, she was present and involved in every significant legal and political challenge the Nation faced, as well as its moments of great pride and success. An instrumental member of the Nation government, the character and integrity she imparted, her willful spirit, her love for children, and her inspiring presence will be greatly missed.”
