MILLBROOK – Mary Gloade has left behind a tremendous legacy not only for her family, but for the community she loved.
Mary died last fall after battling Lou Gerhig’s disease. Before illness struck her, she was a force to be reckoned with and lived life to the fullest.
“She was an environmentalist before it was cool to be one,” said daughter Elizabeth Paul.
“We weren’t allowed to use coloured toilet paper way back because of the dyes in it. And when composting came, she was in her glory.”
Family was a priority to Mary. Every moment she had with her eight children was cherished.
“Up to Grade 12 she kissed each child as they were going out the door,” recalled Elizabeth. “She had unconditional love ... She must have been tired but she did not complain about so many children to look after. And she instilled a strong sense of moral justice in her children. She did not have respect for people who were not honest and straight forward.”
Daughter Jeanette Gloade said all Mary’s children are successful, thanks to their mother’s hard work and value of education.
“School was so important to her ... and she loved to read. She passed that on to us and it made us better people.”
The family also learned to respect and hold dear their Mi’kmaq heritage thanks to Mary’s fierce loyalty to the culture.
“She was always proud of being Mi’kmaq. She lived it everyday. She loved (getting) the chance to talk to her friends and family in her own language ... and she stressed the importance of doing what was right, to have pride in who you were and where you came from,” said Elizabeth.
Faith also played a huge role in her mother’s life, said Elizabeth. “Her faith in God and her religion was something she passed down to her children. I remember learning to say prayers with her.”
Jeanette said her mother will be remembered as amazing to everyone who knew her. “I’ll miss her friendship and her love of nature,” Jeanette said.
The community will also remember Mary because of “her kindness. She was always helping people and never turned anybody away.”
