Velma Mae `Cookie' Bell Rock
Velma Mae "Cookie" Bell Rock, Ashduuptakloichish "Strikes Both Camps," 58, a firefighter and nurse assistant, died Jan. 29, 2007. She was born Nov. 6, 1948, in Crow Agency, the fourth of eight children born to Edward and Josephine Whiteman Sr. She grew up in Pryor, attending St. Charles School, Pryor Elementary, Edgar High School and Chilocco Indian School. She eventually obtained her G.E.D. and completed an emergency medical training program at Eastern Montana College. She married James Keith Bell Rock Sr. on Nov. 6, 1978. She worked as a cook's aide at St. Charles School and Pryor Senior Citizens Center, as a certified nurse assistant and as a firefighter. She was diagnosed with cancer in 1996. She was a member of the Whistling Water Clan and a Ties the Bundle Child. She was a lifetime member of St. Charles Parish in Pryor and participated in the sweat lodge, Native American Church and sun dance. Survivors include her mother; children, Dione Jay Bell Rock, James Keith Bell Rock and Rita Faith Bell Rock; 11 grandchildren; siblings, Geneva Whiteman, Norman Whiteman, Edward P. Whiteman Jr., Jolene Kills Pretty Enemy, Channis Whiteman, Valeen Plain Feather, Carol Good Luck; and adopted sister, Loretta Sedlmayer.
