TICAR request for help in Oklahoma
TICAR request for help in Oklahoma
Dear Friends and Relations,
Louis Gray, the President of TICAR-OK (and a Wounded Knee '73
veteran who has
never quit working on behalf of our people) has asked us to help show the
Pawhuska, Oklahoma school board that this issue can not be swept under
the rug
and forgotten. We need to make them aware that people from all over Indian
Country are watching to see that justice is done for these children.
TICAR asks
that we diplomatically call and/or fax the Board to request that the
issue be
given a full and complete hearing at the next school board meeting.
Pawhuska is
on the Osage reservation and is the headquarters of the Osage Nation.
Please
spread this around ndn country and be sure to call and fax, maybe some
of you
can find some email addys for them too. TICAR is a small band of diehard
activists who work to combat racism in Oklahoma, they deserve all the
help we
can send their way. Details of the issue are at the bottom. Carter

Please find below contact information for the Pawhuska
Superintendent and
School Board members.
The student, who was subject to a teacher's racial remarks, and her
family,
along with TICAR President Louis Gray addressed the Pawhuska School Board
requesting that this particular issue be made an official Agenda item
for their
March 7th School Board meeting.
Please contact the superintendent and board members listed below
and urge them
to make this an action item on their next school board meeting agenda.
Administrative officials are already making statements to the media
that the
issue has already been addressed and resolved to everyone's
satisfaction and
that is not accurate in the least.
Please act on this issue on behalf of all the children and silent
victims of
this teacher's actions.
Please see the original account of what has been occuring and
brought this
issue to the fore below the board member's contact information.

Subject: TUES. FEB. 7th - Pawhuska School Board mtg.
TICAR has been called upon to support 2 American Indian families at
Pawhuska's
Board of Education meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, February 7th, at 5:30 p. m.
The families are asking for our support due to a teacher who has
been calling
American Indian students, "savages" and other racially derogatory
names. One
of the families, is both American Indian and Mexican, and the teacher
has also
called the Mexican students "wetbacks", and used the "N" word in front
of her
African-American student teacher as well. The teacher does not think
twice
about calling students and anyone else, these racial names openly in
front of
the entire class, and in other public situations.
Other American Indian families have previously attempted to have
this same
teacher removed from the Pawhuska school system but for whatever
reason the
Pawhuska school board and the school administration have either failed
to act or
would not act beyond requiring the teacher to merely apologize to the
students.
However, her last "apology" consisted of her saying she was sorry if
she had
said something to offend the student(s) but that "you are what you are".
The teacher in question, apparently is a detriment to ALL students, and
indiscriminately calls both female and male students "stupid" and
apparently
doesn't think anything of hitting any of the students in her class
with her
shoe.
The families that have requested TICAR's support have decided to
work within
and through the Pawhuska school system to have the situation with this
particular teacher permanently resolved for the sake of all the
students who are
subject to her attitudes and opinions on a daily basis. However, it is
difficult for the families whose children are in her class day after
day, and
causes other families to be reluctant and come forward and challenge this
teacher and the school system that obviously supports her. So it is
important
that as many of us as possible support these families that are willing to
confront this situation, by attending tomorrow evening's school board
meeting
and letting their board and administrators know that we do not
consider racism
merely a "local" problem.
If anyone is interested in carpooling from the Tulsa area please
reply to this
e-mail. We will be leaving the Tulsa area by no later than 4:15 p.m.
tomorrow.
All others please contact Louis Gray at louisgray@hotmail.com for more
information and/or directions to the Pawhuska Board of Education meeting.
