Plan To Promote American Indian Culture
South Dakota lawmakers have approved a plan to give South Dakotans a better understanding of American Indian culture by making it a priority in public schools.
Both legislative chambers passed a bill offered by Governor Rounds that would set up an Indian Education Office and an Indian Education Advisory Council with representatives from each of the state's nine tribes.
Marcia Zephier of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe is on the advisory council. She says the legislation ensures that Indian education will be a permanent part of the state content standards. Zephier teaches the Native American Connections classes at Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls and says the new law will prompt individual school districts to start programs in their schools.
