Little did Georgina Roy know that when she said "Boo Zhoo,"
which means hello in the Ojibwe tribal language, that millions of people
would hear those words for the first time in Chicago Illinois, when the
new Ancient Americans Exhibit opened this week at the Field Museum.
Clovia Malatare, a native Lakota language teacher also appears on the
video panels that greet all visitors to the exhibit.
Georgina and Clovia are both teachers at NAES College in Chicago. NAES
is the only private American Indian College in the United States, and
the only college teaching tribal languages in the state of Illinois.
NAES is affiliated with Eastern Illinois University and offers a
bachelors degree.
NAES has been in existence for over 30 years, offering college programs
to tribal members in reservation areas as far away as Fort Peck Montana,
and as close as the Menominee Reservation in Wisconsin.
On Saturday evening March 11, NAES College students, teachers, dancers and
singers from over 20 different tribes, will get to see the Field Exhibit
for the first time, and get to hear their words and pictures displayed
as part of the 2,000 piece exhibit celebrating the cultures of people
for thousands of years throughout the Americas.
"We are still living and celebrating life as Native people living in
Chicago today, and this is important for America to know," said Dr.
Dorene Wiese, President of NAES College.
