SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT CAPOTES
Capotes, from the very simple styles to the most elaborate, have been around for a long time and have been worn by people in all walks of life. They were designed or cut along the lines of early European or Colonial style clothing. Contrary to today's common belief, it was the French Voyageurs, rather than the American Indians, who popularized the capote. The Indians traded beaver pelts for the comfortable fitting tailored style blanket coats and added their own decorations.
Our capotes and blankets are the most extensive line available anywhere. All our blankets are manufactured by the best companies in the business. Given the care they deserve, our capotes and blankets will provide many years of satisfactory service.
Capotes and blankets should be dry cleaned. They can also be hand washed or washed in a machine on the gentle cycle. Consult your washing machine manufacturer for instructions on washing wool. Use care in handling, wash in lukewarm water (70° or cooler), rinse thoroughly, and allow to drip dry on a breezy day. Never dry your capotes and blankets in the sun, with heat or in a dryer. BE GENTLE -- WE RECOMMEND DRY CLEANING.
FINISHED CAPOTES & CAPOTE KITS
We offer a variety of authentic styles of capotes that should appeal to most anyone, whether they be emulating the western mountain man, voyageur of the north, eastern longhunter, Native American, or m ilitary from the French and Indian Wars to the Civil War.
Finished capotes are hand sewn with a double whiip (cross "X") stitch and seams turned in. All capotes are sewn with a strong yarn that holds up under rugged use.
Kits are pre-cut from the blanket of your choice and come with needle, yarn, instructions and all the material necessary for the style and size ordered.
Finished capotes and kits come with an inside breast pocket. Pocket stitching on finished capotes is not visible on the outside (excluding Canoe Jacket and Frontiersman).
The Meti's style comes with colorful trim of the period. Trim design (geometric or floral) and color are matched to your choice of blanket. Trim is machine sewn in finished form.

CANOE JACKET
Early tailored-style cut allows for maximum mobility. Great for canoeing horseback riding or serious trekking. A short ¾ length coat with a large cape and turned-up collar, and a single-breasted, button-down front.
FRINGED
The Plains Indian fringed- or square-cut style capote is a cut characteristic of a later era than the tailored styles we offer. It is worn and approved at most rendezvous today. By all accounts, however, this cut or style came in after the height of the popular Fur Trade Era. Comes with belt, hood and hood ties.
LONGHUNTER
Cut much the same as the Colonial military long coats, with a cape that gives double thickness over the shoulders. Comes with a large turned-up collar, belt and lapel button.
NOR'WESTER
The Nor'Wester capote is cut along the same lines the military great coat. The hood gives it a more northern appearance. Comes with a belt and cape that gives added warmth. A lapel button pulls up the collar so that it fits snugly around the neck.
FRONTIERSMAN
This is a single-breasted style that could have been worn by most anyone. Regular tailored cut with a four-button down front. Comes with a wide cape and collar with short fringed edges. A comfortable style capote.
VOYAGEUR
The early style capote is cut for comfort and mobility. A favorite of Colonial military and Voyageurs, it has a large turned-up collar and belt.
OLD TAILOR
A most practical and universal capote style. The hood ties secure the hood in cold or windy weather. Early Colonial cut that allows good arm movement – suitable most anywhere.
METI'S
Cut along the same lines as the Nor'Wester, with a French-Indian mixture embellished by the colorful trim of the Voyageur Era, Meti's come with cape, hood, belt and lapel button. A most stylist capote.
