Paula Warren, Tyler, recently was honored for her service to the state and national society of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Ms. Warren served the Texas State Society as the American Indians chairman for three years. At the conclusion of her chairmanship, seven awards were presented for her service.
She has been a member of Mary Tyler Chapter for almost 25 years, has proven 20 lineal ancestors who served in the American Revolution and served as one of the chapter's past regents, as well as many other chapter offices.
Ms. Warren, who holds the title of "Honorary Chapter Regent" for life, has held many chairmanships for the state of Texas, but the American Indians Committee became her passion for service.
"There are so many needs that our Native American people still have today, and we must not leave them out of the realm of our compassion," Ms. Warren said.
The Daughters of the American Revolution help support two schools that are for Native Americans. The National Society, through the members help support Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla., that is now a four-year college; Chemawa Indian High School in Salem, Ore., which is also a boarding school for many disadvantaged and troubled youths; and the Indian Youth of America Summer Camp Program.
The DAR has the American Indian Scholarship Fund that provides $500 per semester to Native American students of any age, any tribe, in any state, and who are in financial need, Ms. Warren said.
