Insulting an elderly Lakota man in Rapid City
Rapid City draws thousands of visitors from Pine Ridge, Rosebud and
the
other Indian nations in the region for the LNI Tournament.
The Lakota/Dakota people spend millions of dollars there every year.
Now we would like to offer all of our readers a cautionary warning.
If you
experience any form of racial discrimination in Rapid City during the
LNI
please write it down and email it or send it to Lakota Country Times
and we
will publish your remarks.
Case in point: Last Monday an elderly Lakota man purchased gasoline
at the
BP Station and Mini-Store on East North and Milwaukee Streets in
Rapid City.
He paid for his gas at the pump and then went into the store to buy a
lottery ticket, something he did every week at that very store.
There was a new attendant behind the counter, a young white woman
about 23
years of age.
He handed her his lottery ticket and when she returned it to him with
the
stub he handed her some money and asked her if that was enough. She
didn't
answer him, or since he was a little hard of hearing he did not hear
her
answer. When he asked her again if this was enough the woman said very
loudly and angrily, "I JUST GOT DONE TELLING YOU THAT THIS WAS
ENOUGH!"
Taken aback by her angry response, he took his ticket and said to the
young
lady, "I think you should be a little more respectful to your
customers."
The young lady replied with venomous anger, "F_ _ _ YOU."
The elderly Lakota man left the store in a state of shock and anger.
He
called BP's headquarters and they professed shock and said they would
take
care of the matter.
One week later the girl was still working in the store and absolutely
nothing had been done to reprimand her. In fact, her profanity was
reason
for termination, not reprimand. If she had said these words to an
elderly
white customer do you think she would have gotten away with it?
It is a shame that these racist things still go on in a city that
draws
millions of dollars in business every year from the citizens of Indian
country. To use the F-Word to an elderly Lakota man for him simply
asking to
be treated with respect is unthinkable and reprehensible. And for no
action
to be taken against the vile young lady is even more unthinkable.
And so we ask all of our readers to write down any racial
discrimination
they run into while visiting Rapid City for the LNI Tournament and we
will
publish your comments and let's see what we can do to bring this kind
of
nonsense to an end once and for all.
