Scene & Heard By Carrie L. Ord ARIZONA DAILY STAR Haven opens treatment center to serve American Indian women The Haven, a women's residential treatment center for drug and alcohol abuse, held a grand opening on Feb. 22 for its Feather Lodge.
The building allows six to eight American Indians in treatment to live with others from their culture.
The event also highlighted the introduction of Native Ways services, new treatment options that incorporate culture.
An Indian blessing by Maria Padia-Jim started off the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Counselor Victoria Steele welcomed attendees, who toured the building, ate traditional foods prepared by clients and heard a flute and drum performance by John Oberly.
In attendance were past and present clients; Executive Director Margaret Higgins; board members Dr. Diane Katz, Judith Cohen, Betty Belk, Donna Reid and Astrid Lundstrom; David Sampson of Tohono O'odham Behavioral Health; Veronica Boone of the Tucson Indian Center; Sylvia Polacca of the University of Arizona Indian studies program; Melissa Morales of the Pascua Yaqui Women's PATH program; Eddie Grijalva of Compass Health Care; Victor Flores of the Community Partnership of Southern Arizona; B.J. Frady and Juan Gutierrez of Pueblo of Isleta in New Mexico; and Richard Johnson of Merrill Lynch
