New Medicaid law could affect American Indians’ coverage New Medicaid law could affect American Indians' coverage Last Update: 04/29/2006 1:12:34 PM By: Associated Press www.kobtv.com/index.cfm?viewer=storyviewer&id=25517&cat=4HEALTHFARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - A new law requiring applicants to present a birth certificate or passport to qualify for Medicaid could leave some American Indians and others without coverage. That's according to New Mexico Voices for Children. Sharon Kayne, communications director for the organization, says American Indians and others who were born at home and don't have hospital birth certificates won't qualify for Medicaid under the law. New Mexico Voices for Children estimates that 1.7 million adults and 2.9 million children don't have birth certificates. The new law takes effect July 1st. Its intent is to deny assistance to undocumented immigrants. Navajo Nation officials say many elderly Navajos on Medicaid were born at home and can't prove citizenship.
