Feds shut down Fresno health center for American Indians Associated Press FRESNO, Calif. - A health center that serves American Indians will close Friday because it treats too few patients, officials said.
The federal Indian Health Service told officials at the Fresno Native American Health Center that it will not renew its $330,000 contract to provide doctor referrals and counseling on diabetes, substance abuse, nutrition and other health issues.
A lack of clients and a regular nurse led to the shutdown, said officials with the Indian Health Service, a federal health program for American Indians and Alaska natives. It has similar centers in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The Fresno center opened in 2003 to serve an estimated 13,000 American Indians living in Fresno County, said Virginia Sutter, the local center's executive director.
The center tried to hire a nurse and medical director but the federal agency did not approve the candidates, she said.
