Family Beats overwhelming odds for loved one
by Virginia Richey
Briana Marie Black is the daughter of Ed Jr. and Victoria Black, of El
Reno, OK. She has a loving family with nine siblings, six of them still
living at home. They are no strangers to adversity or what it takes to
overcome it.
Two weeks before Briana's first birthday, her family received very
upsetting news. Briana had Leukemia. When the initial devastation and
shock wore off, they faced her medical issues with amazing strength and
courage.
The first approach was Chemotherapy, and while most studies show that
this can be an effective form of treatment, Black's doctors had not
worked with such a young patient.
They were unsure of the effects that such an aggressive treatment would
have on her. It would be a trial and error process so to speak, and the
various experimental procedures came with disabling costs to young
Briana. She is now totally disabled, and has also lost her sight. Many
times the family was encouraged to place her in a 24-hour care facility,
and given little to no hope of her survival. They were told that she
would not live past the age of five. " They are only doctor's, giving
their medical opinion. The Creator is the one with all power, He has
continued to bless our family with her life for nine years," Ed Jr.
stated.
Ed and Victoria refused to place their daughter in a medical facility.
"Keeping her away from her mom, dad, brothers, and sisters was not an
option, and we decided we would do what ever it takes to provide for
her," Victoria stated. There have been challenging times along the way,
and they have learned the medical training required allowing them to
bring Briana home. Now with the love and support of her family, she
currently attends Lincoln Elementary, in El Reno OK. The school has been
very instrumental, working with the family to provide the necessary
medical equipment to assist in the daily school tasks.
In an effort to make Briana's life as normal as possible, the family has
always included her in the their everyday routines, such as: watching
television, listening to music, going to the movies, attending dances
and powwows or just a simple trip to Wal-Mart. However, now that she has
grown and reaching a healthy weight, it has become increasing difficult
to lift her. A new medical need is now upon them and just like always
they are putting forth their best efforts. They are working to raise
funds to purchase and install, a full sized wheelchair lift. The lift
will allow the family to continue providing the quality care to Briana's
daily living.
They would like tosend a special thanks to everyone who has offered
words of encouragement and kept their family, and Briana in their
prayers. The family extends their experience, strength, and hope to
others who may be in need. Donations for the wheelchair lift are
welcome. May the Creator continue to bless you and your families.
