Two finalists for IAIA president
The Institute of American Indian Arts heard from one of its two finalists for president at a public forum Thursday.
Joe Baker spoke to a full house in the institute's auditorium, answered questions on the importance of education and told how he would recruit more students. "More than 60 percent of Native Americans live in urban areas," he said. "We need to face the facts that we need to be in the larger cities recruiting."
A forum for the other finalist, Cassandra Manuelito-Kerkvliet, is scheduled for 9 a.m. today.
Baker is the Lloyd Kiva New curator of fine art at the Heard Museum in Phoenix. Manuelito-Kerkvliet is a member of the National Science Foundation's biological sciences advisory committee and an advisory board member of the William D. Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming.
