Destruction in Oxford, Alabama
The city of Oxford, Al. will be purchasing 360 acres to build a sports and recreational complex. On this site lays 13 registered archaeological sites, including a high-class burial mound, the only ceremonial complex in a 4 county area. The site on the sod farm is Ulibahali, a village mentioned at least 5 times by Hernando de Soto and other Spanish explorers who traveled through the valley in 1540 and 1560. Excavations have yielded prehistoric corn, spear points, pots, storage vessels and an entire house dating back to the 12th or 13th century. If federal money is used in any form on this project, the site has to be protected, but the Mayor of Oxford was asked if the city would use federal money, Mayor Leon Smith said,"I wouldn't think so, no." Which means this site will be bulldozed and another burial site destroyed. Please, call Mayor Leon Smith and voice your opposition to this destruction, his number is 256-831-7510, or write your disaproval to this:Mayor Leon Smith, 145 Hamric Dr., Oxford, Al. 36203. sgi
