Participants held a ceremony at Alcatraz Island and headed to DQ University, California's inter-tribal Native American college in Yolo County. Runners will travel through 12 states, including those on the Gulf Coast where people are rebuilding communities following the devastation of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The runners plan to arrive in Washington, D.C., on April 22, Earth Day. "It's time for us to take a walk and reflect on what it means to be human," said Tim Raposa, a run supporter who teaches anthropology at Sacramento City College.
