Blackhawk Powwow Grounds listed on State Register of Historic Places
The Wisconsin Historical Society placed the Blackhawk Powwow Grounds (Town of Komensky, Jackson County) on the State Register of Historic Places on Jan. 19. The Blackhawk Powwow Grounds have been used as a ceremonial and social event center as well as a dance-ring or powwow ground since the 19th century. Mildred Evenson, co-curator of Native American photos at the Jackson County Historical Society, said she was happy the grounds were recognized in such a manner.
“We are very pleased and feel it is a great honor, and well deserved honor,†she said.
The State Register, maintained by the Wisconsin Historical Society, is Wisconsin’s official listing of properties in the state determined to be significant to Wisconsin’s heritage.
