Schumer Bets Against Native American Casino
Nov 15, 2005 6:47 am US/Eastern (1010 WINS) HAMPTON BAYS, Long Island U-S Senator Charles Schumer is opposing the plan by the Shinnecock Indians to be federally recognized as a tribe. Schumer is asking the U-S Bureau of Indian Affairs to reject the Shinnecock application. Last week a federal judge said the Shinnecock's claim to being federally recognized an Indian Tribe had merit.
Schumer says he opposes the tribal application because the Shinnecocks want to build a casino on their land in Hampton Bays.
The senator says the casino would have a disastrous impact on the residents of the East End of Long Island.
He adds a casino would create traffic congestion and harm the surrounding woodlands, bays and beaches.
Indian tribes can not operate gaming on their lands unless they are recognized by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs.
But a tribal spokesman Lance Gumbs says the recognition from the Bureau of Indian Affairs will help the Shinnecocks get help from federal housing, education and health care programs.
