The Associated Press has asked the two major candidates for governor 100 questions to help voters gauge the politicians on top state and national issues and some that touch on their values, their life, and how they spend their time. The series will continue to Election Day.
The candidates are Republican John Faso and Democrat Eliot Spitzer.
___
Will you collect state taxes on cigarettes sold to non-Indians on Indian land? How?P>
Faso: "Yes, the current law should be enforced. As governor, I will work with all sides, including the Indian nations and tribes and the Legislature, to ensure we come to a comprehensive resolution that respects all sides."
Spitzer: "Yes. I will ensure the law is enforced by pulling the licenses from tax-stamping agents that illegally ship unstamped cartons of cigarettes to reservations. I will also make sure the law is enforced peacefully by working with the leaders of Native American communities."
___
Do you approve of the performance of President Bush in office?P>
Faso: "Although I do not agree with every decision he has made, I believe he has done an extraordinary job in the war on terror. In addition, the president's selection of justices Roberts and Alito to the Supreme Court was superb."
Spitzer: "No. President Bush has shown a serious lack of leadership on any number of issues, from his management of the war in Iraq, the disproportionate homeland security dollars he has earmarked for New York, to his proactive efforts to roll back important environmental protections, and his misguided opposition to stem cell research, to name just a few. I believe he is taking this country in the wrong direction and lacks the vision necessary to lead us forward."
___
What mistake have you made in public service?P>
Faso: "I regret supporting broad pension enhancements in 2000 which later proved unaffordable after 9/11."
Spitzer: "In 1994, I made the mistake of running for statewide office without having put in the necessary time to get to know New Yorkers in every corner of the state. Because of that I deserved to lose _ but I think that my record since has shown that I learned an important lesson."
