Tribes meet with governor Posted by: "SAL CAMARILLo" salcamarillo1@sbcglobal.net salcamarillo1 Fri Jul 7, 2006 8:25 am (PST) SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today reached out again to Indian leaders, telling dozens of tribal representatives that he will consider appointing a tribal liaison in his office.
The hour-long meeting with tribes affiliated with the California Nations Indian Gaming Association at a hotel near the Capitol was at least the fourth that the governor has had with tribal leaders over the last couple of months.
In it, Schwarzenegger offered to negotiate new or revised gambling compacts with interested tribes, said Darrel Ng, the governor’s spokesman, and picked up on a suggestion of CNIGA president Anthony Miranda to establish a tribal liaison similar to the ones for public safety and the crime victims advocate. Details still must be worked out, Ng said.
Miranda said the goal is to have a contact to discuss not only gambling but public policy matters like water, health and education issues.
CNIGA has 68 tribal members, including tribes in the Coachella Valley.
