RAPID CITY - The former director of Native Women's Health Care in
Rapid City has been indicted on federal charges of larceny and health-
care fraud.
According to documents filed in U.S. District Court, Sheila Ladeaux
is accused of taking more than $1,000 from the Oglala Sioux Tribe
between January 2002 and the present.
Ladeaux also was charged with converting a check for $1,872 from the
South Dakota Medicaid Program to Native Women's Health Care to her
own use.
An employee at Native Women's Health Care said Wednesday that Ladeaux
was the program's former director but declined to comment further.
Ladeaux also was named in a separate indictment charging five people
with health-care fraud. That case alleges that more than $90,000 in
false claims were filed through American Family Life Assurance
Company of Columbus, or AFLAC, using information gathered through
Indian Health Service patient files. That indictment charges Ladeaux,
along with co-defendant Paulette Twiss, with filing false claims
totaling more than $13,500.
Ladeaux is in custody at Pennington County Jail. Documents filed in
U.S. District Court indicate that a judge ruled that Ladeaux is a
potential danger to the community.
