Government suing Menominee tribe
MILWAUKEE — The federal government has filed a lawsuit against the Menominee tribe's business arm, alleging it falsely billed the Bureau of Indian Affairs for fire suppression and roadwork and spent more than $1 million for unauthorized purposes.
The lawsuit was filed against Menominee Tribal Enterprises and two individuals, Marshall Pecore and Conrad Waniger, U.S. Attorney Steven Biskupic said in a statement.
The lawsuit seeks recovery of damages and civil penalties, the statement said. It did not elaborate. A message left for Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Larsen Tuesday afternoon wasn't immediately returned.
