The Blackfeet Playerz traveled to the Native American Basketball Invitational held in Phoenix, Ariz., July 9-15.
Members of the Blackfeet Playerz team competing at the Native American Basketball Invitational included (back, from left) Coach Ross Whiteman, Clayton Juneau, DJ Fish, Joe Wagner, Andrew Spotted Wolf, Clint Not Afraid, Kyle Dusty Bull, Coach Roy Ingraham, (front, from left) Jordan Long Time Sleeping, Ron Ingraham, Chris Gobert, Maverick White Clay and Justin White Clay.
Both boys and girls teams played in the pool play July 10-12, and both teams qualified for the single elimination tournament which started July 13. After the pool play the standings were announced and Blackfeet Playerz were the third place team, and the Lady Hoopsterz were in second place.
NABI is sponsored by Nike, the Phoenix Suns and Mercury, and tribes from Arizona. The NCAA was on hand, along with many college recruiters, looking to land a few players for their programs. After the third game, four of our boys were asked if they were interested in playing for the Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kan. This is the main reason we bring these players to such a prestigious tournament, to showcase their talents.
In the first round, the Native Playerz met 4 Corners and played very well. The 4 Corners players include players from Phoenix, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. Our boys kept up the pace and the scoring went back and forth, but we came up short and 4 Corners came out on top after time expired, 74-82.
During the first game of pool play, we met the Shiprock Boyz (71-66). On Tuesday we played two games, and in our first game we played a team from British Columbia - the Heiltsuk Nation - and again came out on top with the score of 86-27. In our second game we played the Chosen Few, winning 77-58, and in our last game of pool play we played the hometown team of Salt River High and came out winners at 82-60. Our boys played well during both pool play and the top 16, but again we came up short.
The Blackfeet Playerz team members include DJ Fish, Jordon Long Time Sleeping, Clayton Juneau, Maverick White Clay, Justin White Clay, Joe Wagner, Kyle Dusty Bull, Ronald Ingraham, Andrew Spotted Wolf, Clint Not Afraid and Chris Gobert. They are coached by Ross Whiteman and Roy Ingraham.
As for the girls team, they played very well in the pool play and they played a team from Elko, Nev., in the first game and came out on top with the score of 68-54. On Tuesday they played Tuba City and again came out on top with a score of 50-29, and on Wednesday they played Native Stars and won the last game of pool play, 75-21. That placed the Hoopsterz in the second spot in the tournament.
In the first round of the single elimination tournament, the Lady Hoopsterz played the tough Lady Chiefs in a close game, with the Hoopstez coming out on top at 59-51, advancing to the second round, the “Elite 8.” However, during the second round the Lady Hoopsterz met a well balanced team from New Mexico and came up short at 44-48.
The Lady Hoopsterz team members are Rikki Ollinger, Teri Lea McCormick, Natasha Baldwin, Constance Day Chief, Phyllis Kipp, Ida Mountain Chief and Jenna Skunkcap. They were coached by Charlie Mountain Chief and Kitty Skunkcap.
