Former American Indian tribal leader wants in state Hall of Fame www.kten.com/Global/story.asp?S=5873252SEMINOLE, Okla. A Seminole woman who says she was the first female elected as a chief of an American Indian tribe in Oklahoma believes she should be added to the state's Hall of Fame. In 1973, Dora Schexnider Young was elected as chief of the 32-hundred-member Sac and Fox tribe by 67 votes.Young says she "broke ground" for tribal governments in Oklahoma and that she belongs in the state hall for that reason alone. In 1985, Wilma Mankiller received national recognition from publications including Time when she was elected as the first female chief of the 250-thousand-member Cherokee Nation.By comparison, Young's election received little notice. Young says Mankiller, who was inducted into the state hall in 1994, must have had good public relations people. Before Young, only one woman served as the chief of an Oklahoma tribe. Alice Brown Davis was appointed to lead the Seminole Nation from 1922 to 1935.
