Friday, November 10, 2006
The first copy of "Veterans of the Valley," a new book published by The Valley Independent as a tribute to the men and women who fought for the freedom we enjoy, was presented Thursday to retired Gen. Wiliam "Gus" Pagonis, a Charleroi native who wrote the forward for the publication.
Pagonis, who served as chief of logistics for the Army during Operation Desert Storm, received the book from Chris Buckley, a member of The Valley Independent news staff who wrote all of the stories that appear in "Veterans of the Valley."
The book features the history of America at war - from the French and Indian War that had its roots not far from our Valley to the current worldwide war against terrorism.
And it's loaded with personality profiles of numerous the Valley residents who fought in many of those wars - from World War II until today.
There's also a special chapter devoted to the various municipal memorials that pay tribute to local residents who served in the armed forces.
"'Veterans of the Valley' is a wonderful recap of the men and women from the Mid-Mon Valley who served our nation in our Armed Forces from the American Revolution to the modern-day Gulf Wars," Pagonis wrote in his forward.
"The Mid-Mon Valley has definitely produced outstanding professional athletes such as Stan Musial, Joe Montana and many others who have received notoriety and extensive publicity.
"But the Valley also has produced dedicated and truly superb human beings who deserve their place in our history and must not be forgotten.
"This book does exactly that - read and appreciate their outstanding contributions."
Advance sales of the book are being offered for $14.95, including tax, until Wednesday, when it will be sold at the post-publication price of $19.95.
The book also will be for sale at a special reduced rate during the Veterans Day parade Saturday in Donora at the Union Pharmacy, which is located at 642 McKean Ave.
