Indian religious music and Native-themed films New websites offer fans access to previously unavailable resources TULSA OK Sam Lewin 7/20/2006 nativetimes.com/index.asp?action=displayarticle &article_id=8018 The Internet continues to expand Native resources and for the first time ever, Christian Native American music is just a mouse click away. Another online service meanwhile gives you the scoop on Indian-interest films. ?It?s never been done before and now it?s in reach of anyone that wants to hear,? former Tulsa resident Roger Martin tells the Native American Times about his religious music website that only features American Indian artists. Martin, part Cherokee and raised on the Apache Reservation in Arizona, is the force behind the Jesus Broadcasting Network. ?It?s Native American songwriters and musicians,? Martin said. ?Before this they were writing and singing their hearts out but never got any airplay.? While Martin is a devout Christian and obviously a lover of Indian music, he says his motivation in making the music available 24/7 can be boiled down to one premise: Reaching the youth. ?We need to feature more Native American Christian role models,? Martin states. The realization came to him when he watched his grandson graduate from kindergarten. A teacher quizzed the youngsters on what they wanted to be when they grew up. ?The kids said they wanted to be basketball players, cops or firemen. So at the age of five these kids have already had a role model-somebody they have seen of their own culture,? Martin said. ?But when I ask our Native youth what they want to be, they answer that they don?t know. So I looked around and I realized there are no Native role models prominent in the media. We think that if a young person can see a Native American role model it could touch them and change their life. I don?t think there is any greater impact on a young mind.? Martin and his wife Charlene are the founders of the Indian Christian Fellowship Inc., an organization involved in ministry to Native American communities. Following his military service, Martin embarked on several business ventures in Tulsa. He and Charlene graduated from Victory Bible Institute in 1996, and Martin decided to follow his father?s example and become a preacher. The website?s address is: www.jesusbroadcastingnetwork.com/index.htm. While the Jesus Broadcasting Network seeks to provide role models, NativeVue Film & Media Connection (www.nativevue.org) is a treasure trove of information for folks interested in American Indian/Alaska Native films?feature length, documentaries, shorts, or television productions. The site webmasters say that in August they plan a special feature on the First Nations Film & Video Festival, a blog on Native pop culture and interviews with Native filmmakers. NativeVue will provide ?real-time? conversation about new movies and television programs, those in production, and upcoming film festivals, as well as feature performers and the creative folks working behind the scenes,? said the site?s Carole Levine in an announcement touting the new service. ?We will include candid discussions of why it?s important. Our impressive group of contributors?filmmakers, journalists, and actors?will always work to give readers timely, interesting, and yes, entertaining news and commentary.?
