They don't have a casino or reservation. But they have a mission they helped build 200 years ago. It's become a tradition for the San Luis Rey Band of Luise€ ¦ño Indians to come back to the mission each year and have a powwow. The 11th annual intertribal powwow Friday through Sunday is expected to draw thousands of visitors to a weekend of American Indian dance, art and music at Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. The two-day event brings American Indian dancers and crafters from a dozen tribes throughout California and across the country to share their culture and traditions. € ¦’³It's a way to tell people the San Luis Rey Indians are still here,€ ¦’´ said Carmen Mojado, vice chairman and secretary of the San Luis Rey Indian Foundation, which is sponsoring the event. € ¦’³We're not wearing animal hides and we might not look like the Indians they show in Hollywood, but we're here.€ ¦’´ WHAT Annual San Luis Rey Band of Luise€ ¦ño Mission Indians Intertribal Powwow WHEN 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday WHERE Mission San Luis Rey, 4050 Mission Ave. COST Free and open to the public INFORMATION www.slrmissionindians.org or (760) 757-3659
