Ulm Pishkun purchases easement By Gazette News Services The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks will buy a permanent conservation easement on 418 acres of state-owned land adjacent to the northern boundary of Ulm Pishkun State Park west of Great Falls. FWP's Feb. 12 decision comes at the end of a public comment period on an environmental assessment on the proposal. The land, owned by the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, includes the northern extension of buffalo jump cliffs, the historic ramps used by American Indian tribes accessing the buffalo jump, native prairie grassland habitats, cultural resources and prehistoric sites. The conservation easement acquisition will be implemented in accordance with an option agreement negotiated between FWP and DNRC, allowing FWP five years to obtain the full purchase price of $334,000. During the five-year period, FWP will pay a lease fee, which will be applied and deducted from the agreed purchase price. This action is subject to appeal, which must be submitted to the FWP director in writing, and postmarked within 30 days of the date of this decision notice. Subsequent to this decision, the FWP Commission approved this action at its Feb. 13 meeting. The final environmental assessment and decision notice may be viewed in the public notices section of the FWP Web site at www.fwp.gov. Direct questions regarding the decision notice to: Gary Bertellotti, Region 4 supervisor, 4600 Giant Springs Road, Great Falls, MT 59405, 406-454-5846.
