Dozens of historians and Native Americans went to the cemetery for a Memorial Day service Saturday and were distressed to see the property under development. Trees had been cut down and earth had been plowed. The group had been working with a developer to have the ground donated to Clay County and declared an historic landmark. The property was sold to another developer, however, and the cemetery was uprooted. The Clay County Sheriff's Office confirms that a member of the Middleburgh Cemetery Commission asked for a criminal investigation, and that an investigation will begin Tuesday. In the meantime a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office says, the developer has agreed to stop work at the site.
