Native writers view explorers from a new angle GLORIA BAUSKE For the Argus Leader February 11, 2006, 2:55 am A new book by a Native American writers' group will be part of the 14th annual South Dakota State University Conference on American Indian History and Culture. The conference will take place on the SDSU campus Feb. 22 and 23. About 200 people are expected to attend. "This Stretch of the River" is produced by the Oak Lake Writers' Society, a statewide society of tribal writers dedicated to culture-based writing. The book gives the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota perspective on the Lewis and Clark expedition and bicentennial through poetry, memoir and historical and critical essays.
