EDMONTON — IBM is starting a program aimed at teaching computer skills and literacy to Alberta’s aboriginal youth, while encouraging them to explore careers in science and technology.
The program is a first for IBM, which will invest roughly $150,000 initially for what is being called Igniting Interest in Technology and Engineering (IGNITE).
Chief Ronald Morin of the Enoch Cree Nation says the partnership will enable aboriginals to be employed in the information technology industry.
Ken Noskey, chairman of Peavine Metis Settlement, says his young people need computer skills to secure lifelong careers.
About 20 students attending an aboriginal high school in Edmonton will be chosen to attend a camp to teach various skills, including how to build web pages.
Aboriginal Relations Minister Guy Boutilier points out that most of Alberta’s aboriginal and Metis settlements are connected to the province’s high-speed Internet system.
