Miamis, American Indian Center, Health Visions to hold Wellness Festival
FORT WAYNE-The first Circle of Wellness Festival is planned for Allen County
by the American Indian Center of Indiana, Health Visions of Fort Wayne, and
the Miami Tribe of Indiana Indians.
The Festival will be held at the League for the Blind & Disabled Inc., 5821
South Anthony Blvd., Fort Wayne 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., June 10. Doors open
at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
The Circle of Wellness Festival will be a combination of educational
presentations, community dialogue and participatory cultural education. Healthy food
choices will also be available for attendees.
The American Indian Center of Indiana Inc., Health Visions of Fort Wayne, and
the Miami Tribe of Indiana Indians seek to engage the community in an
educational dialogue that focuses on native health concerns and native-based ways
of living a healthy lifestyle in today´s urban and rural communities.
Many people throughout Indiana either know of their Native Indian ancestry or
have stories about their Native Indian ancestry. The Circle of Wellness
Festival will assist community members in understanding their potential health
concerns as possible descendants of the First Americans, and in learning more
about traditional American Indian ways of living and how those ways of living
look in our world today.
The festival organizers also seek to gather health information about the
needs and concerns of American Indians and other minority populations living in
Allen County in an effort to relay that information to the State of Indiana
Minority Health Coalition, the State of Indiana Health Department and other
concerned parties in the healthcare industry.
Organizers for the event are Renetta Williams, MSM, executive director of
HealthVisions of Fort Wayne. Chief Brian Buchanan and Dani Tippmann, both of the
Miami Tribe of Indiana Indians and Project Coordinator Tony Showa of the
Navajo Nation and Community Outreach Specialist Jody Rust, both representing the
Indiana Minority Health Coalition grant recently issued to the American
Indian Center of Indiana Inc.
