Native Radio on the Web (media) wcco.com/local/local_story_164071257.htmlRed Lake Tribe Starts Web Radio Station (AP) Red Lake, Minn. The Red Lake Indian Reservation has started a radio station on the Internet. The Web-based station plays a variety of music, and local drum groups and contemporary American Indian artists from Minnesota and across the country have found regular rotation on the station. Soon, the radio station will offer tribal news and Ojibwe language classes. Red Lake has been interested in starting an FM radio station for years, but the tribe has struggled to meet the rigorous and time-consuming federal requirements to get a station off the ground. The Internet radio station was started by tribal member Gary Jourdain, better known to his listeners as "Rez Dawg." Since January, Jourdain and a handful of volunteer DJs have operated the Web radio site out of the spare bedroom of Jourdain's home on the shore of Red Lake. The tribe provided about $7,000 to buy computers, a mixing board and a desk. Jourdain says his ultimate goal is to give voice to Red Lake and bring the community together.
