New Mexico State Representative Patricia Lundstrom (D) will present to
Onawa Lacy from the House of Representatives, State of New Mexico and on
behalf of the People of New Mexico a certificate for her outstanding and
exceptional accomplishments on Thursday, February 8, 2007 at the State
Capitol Building House Chambers.
Onawa Lacy (Dine'), 24, is the daughter of Rena and Rodney Lacy Jr.
of Gallup, New Mexico and the second of three children. She is a 2000
Alumni of Gallup High School and received her Bachelor of Arts Degrees
from the University of New Mexico (2006) in both Native American Studies
and English with a concentration in Pre-Law.
An exceptional student, within her scholastic career notable awards
include: National Deans List, Order of Omega, Clauve Outstanding Senior
Award, American Indian Outstanding Student Service Award, Myrtle
O'Key Memorial Scholarship, and she was a founding sister of UNM
Delta Chapter of Alpha Omega Sorority
Additionally, Onawa found an avenue through pageantry, to celebrate and
share her Dine' heritage at a city, state, national and
international level. Determined, Onawa competed for and earned the honor
of representing her hometown of Gallup, the State of New Mexico, Navajo
Nation and "Native America" within several titles: Miss Indian
New Mexico (2001-2002), Miss Indian World (2003-2004), and Miss New
Mexico USA (2006). Through her titles, Onawa was able to promote various
platforms including health, family, youth, community volunteer work,
positive role models, cultural empowerment, and education. Uniquely,
Onawa was the first Native American to win the Miss New Mexico USA title
and only the 2nd to compete for the Miss USA title where she garnered
both Native American/Indigenous and Mainstream media interest. National
television appearances include: Miss USA, Deal or No Deal, Today Show,
TRL – MTV, Day Side – Fox News, and the E! Special
Upon completion of the 2006 Miss New Mexico USA reign, Onawa accepted a
law internship with the prestigious American Continental Group, LLC and
Johnston & Associates, LLC. In January 2007, Gregory Smith, Esq. an
esteemed Lobbyist of American Indian interests offered Onawa a Senior
Legislative Assistant position with Johnston & Associates. An aspiring
attorney, Onawa will begin law school in 2008 specializing in
International Indigenous Affairs.
